Findings Announced at Launch of Major New Campaign Urging Greater Focus on Poverty During the 2010 Election Season and Beyond
WASHINGTON, DC – Armed with a new report projecting a sharp upswing in poverty in the District, a coalition of organizations and residents launched a major campaign on Wednesday to encourage elected officials and candidates to assume a greater leadership role in tackling the struggles faced by the city’s lowest-income residents.
The new data was unveiled at a forum of community leaders gathered for the launch of Defeat Poverty DC, a non-partisan coalition that is bringing together advocacy groups, business, labor, faith organizations and DC residents. According to the report, which was released by the DC Fiscal Policy Institute (DCFPI), an estimated 11,000 District residents fell into poverty in 2009, causing the city’s poverty rate to jump from 17 to 19 percent – the biggest single-year increase since 1995.
