our families

the facts

  • Nearly 1 in 2 children under 18 in the District is at risk of hunger.
  • 24% of single adults with children are unemployed.
  • 21% of women living in the District live in poverty.
  • The Economic Policy Institute (EPI) estimates that a family of three in DC needs to earn $63,204 a year to cover basic necessities like housing, food, health care, and transportation. No savings, no emergencies, no birthday presents — just the basics.
  • The family is a crucial institution in any campaign against poverty. Family members support one another in countless ways that further education and employment opportunities by providing love and encouragement, caring for children, helping with transportation, and in countless other ways.

While families can positively prevent individuals from falling into poverty, the reverse is also true – poverty causes family relationships to fray, often with devastating consequences. Families on the cusp of poverty or almost able to climb out of it often slip because of disintegrating family relationships caused by the stress of poverty.

When we empower our families, the impact trickles up. We see more diverse and vibrant communities, viable and healthy neighborhoods and an improved quality of life for everyone in the city.
